How to set up Pre-game; Masteries

Masteries
Masteries aren't as crucial to one's performance as runes are, but they're noticeable when you're playing for the first 10 or so minutes. There are 3 trees of mastery, Offense, Defense, and Utility. You generally go down the Offense tree for AD characters, Defense for tanks, and Utility for mana-reliant/AP characters. You unlock  1 point per level, up to a total of 30 points. The most common way of doing masteries is putting 21 points into one tree, say offense, and 9 points into another tree, ending up with 21/0/9

How to set up Pre-game; Runes.

What you do before you start the game can drastically change how you perform in-game. In this post I will talk about runes and how important they are.

Runes
I recommend saving up IP (Influence points, currency you're rewarded for completing games) to buy runes at later levels. I'm not saying be up-tight about it, buy a few champions that appeal to you every now and then, but don't make the mistake of bankrupting yourself and having no runes. Trust me, having good runes is better than having any champion in the game. You unlock one rune slot each time you level up. At level 30, you will have 9 Mark slots, 9 Glyph slots, 9 Seal slots, and 3 Quintessence slots. You unlock them in the order of M>S>G>M>S>G>M>S>G>Q. Runes benefit several things, too many things to cover right now, but they're broken down into the general categories of Abilities, Defense, Health, Mana, Physical attack, and Utility.
